It’s all about you
Come back to bed,
was it something I said?
I don’t think I uttered a word.
The smell of your hair,
and you touching me there
has my lust levels reaching absurd.
You planted the seed
that there’s things that you need -
all things I could easily give;
and sex so insane,
that alone it makes you want to live;
We’ll make music from moans
and rattling bones,
and sliding skin beaded with sweat;
Breath that can’t speak,
due to lips trapped by teeth,
and fists of hair matted and wet;
Long rhythmic swells,
that build deep in our wells,
such tension and ache for release,
but just as we’re set
I decide ‘not yet’,
and then dive below to feast.
You miss me down there,
but soon fail to care
and your eyes roll like you’re playing dead.
Your slow arching spine
proves there’s life so divine,
and your hand grips the back of my head.
Your silken love rose,
on my tongue and my nose,
is all kinds of heavenly sweet.
You whimper and purr
and your hip thrusts concur,
as your free hand claws at the sheet.
You weakly confide
that you want me inside,
and I tell you how I want that too.
But when I don’t rise
you soon realise
that this morning, it’s all about you.
Now that you’ve let go
the energy flow
builds up and explodes with haste.
You convulse, rock and strain,
while a thought fills my brain
that what you got to feel, I can taste.
Even When I’m Sleeping - Leonardo’s Bride (acoustic), 1997
I’ve been asked to play this at a wedding I’m performing at soon. Wow - what a perfecty constructed song. I’d almost forgotten how perfect this track is, and this acoustic version is absolutely mesmerising. Australian vocalist, Abby Dobson was a crush of mine, way back in the day. Re-listening to this has completely rekindled that attraction.
This book is a gift from my father, ‘Phil’. He’s been working on it for over six months, and just gave it to me (and my brother, who’s also a freak for the stuff) yesterday. What an incredible surprise – it’s his ‘Record Recollections’ – a symbolic piece of his dear passion (a passion I certainly inherited), and a physical heirloom that I’ll cherish forever.
Now, being the musicologist that he is – and knowing the music lover and critic that I am – there simply had to be rules, or the 21 years of music (including all of the 60s and most of the 70s) he’s covered could never be confined to a single (and conveniently portable) volume. So there’s two rules that he self-imposed;
- The album must have been released in the years between (and including)
his birth and 21st birthday.
- The album must have been in his collection during those years.
ie. not borrowed and not a classic from the era that he didn’t ‘get into’ until later.
Clearly this was an exercise in humility and honesty. But if you know my father and are aware of his unwavering respect for music, this is something he simply could not be false about. Besides, he’s since listed half a dozen heart-breaking omissions that he was forced to make due to ignorance at the time or a simple ‘lack of funds’.
Along with the band name, album title, year of release and cover art, Phil’s included a short write up with each inclusion. Some of these are analytical and critical, others are anecdotal and personal, but it’s this part more than any other, that makes this compilation so fucking special.
There’s about 130 albums to get through, and because I couldn’t decide on a more logical method, I’m going to attack it at random. I plan to comprehensively listen to every album contained in Phil’s Record Recollections and compare his thoughts and feelings to those of my own - words and emotions from his own flesh and blood, on the same subject matter, several decades later.
The posts that follow will be semi-regular at best, but I hope everyone enjoys reading them as much as I’m going to enjoy writing them. Hopefully it introduces you to some quality music from the past that you were previously unaware of too.

Keep your head above water,
leave me to go down.
You’re the only real reason
to stay in this town.
If I crash, ignite
and burn to the ground
I pray you stand tall.
Not a sound.
